Joey Lucchesi
Joey Lucchesi Lands NRI deal from San Francisco
Mon, Jan 20, 2025, 12:33 PM
The Giants signed Lucchesi to a minor-league contract Monday that includes an invitation to spring training, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports.
Analysis: Lucchesi will earn $1.5 million if he's in the majors. The left-hander made 11 starts with the Mets over the last two seasons, compiling a 3.32 ERA but an underwhelming 39:25 K:BB across 57 innings. Lucchesi will likely begin the 2025 season in the rotation at Triple-A Sacramento.
Justin Verlander
Justin Verlander Already throwing, feeling healthy
Mon, Jan 13, 2025, 12:41 PM
Verlander said Monday that he began throwing much earlier than usual this offseason and is already touching 92 mph, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
Analysis: Verlander averaged 93.5 mph with his four-seamer in 2024, but at this stage of the offseason the hurler is viewing 92 mph as an encouraging sign. The righty also said he's addressed the shoulder and back issues that limited him to just 90.1 innings this past season, although it's not clear exactly what that entails. Verlander inked a one-year, $15 million contract with the Giants last week and will be looking to bounce back in 2025 in what will be his age-42 season.
Blake Sabol
Blake Sabol DFA'd by San Francisco
Sat, Jan 11, 2025, 6:38 PM
The Giants designated Sabol for assignment Saturday, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
Analysis: The move makes room on the Giants' 40-man roster for Justin Verlander, whose one-year, $15 million contract was officially signed Saturday. Sabol spent most of the 2024 regular season with Triple-A Sacramento, where he slashed .246/.340/.388 with 11 stolen bases, 11 home runs and 54 RBI across 403 plate appearances. He did appear in 11 regular-season games with the Giants, going 10-for-32 with five walks, two doubles and one RBI.
Miguel Diaz
Miguel Diaz Latches on with SF
Sat, Jan 11, 2025, 3:32 PM
Diaz signed a minor-league contract with the Giants on Dec. 28.
Analysis: The Astros released Diaz in late May after he started the Triple-A season with a 9.64 ERA through 14 innings. He then signed with the Tigers and finished the year allowing just seven earned runs over 32 minor-league frames. If the 30-year-old righty is able to continue his dominant run in 2025, he may have a chance at contributing to the Giants' bullpen throughout the year.
Tyler Rogers
Tyler Rogers Avoids arbitration
Thu, Jan 9, 2025, 1:53 PM
The Giants and Rogers avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $5.25 million contract Thursday, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
Analysis: Rogers had been arbitration-eligible for a final time this offseason. The side-arming reliever has been one of baseball's busiest relievers over the last several seasons, most recently holding a 2.82 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and 51:6 K:BB over 70.1 innings in 2024.
Camilo Doval
Camilo Doval Avoids arbitration
Thu, Jan 9, 2025, 12:17 PM
The Giants and Doval avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $4.525 million contract Thursday, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
Analysis: Doval was eligible for arbitration for the first time. The 27-year-old lost his closer job and was sent to the minors for a while in 2024, finishing with a 4.88 ERA, 1.58 WHIP and 78:39 K:BB over 59 frames. However, Doval still boasts nasty stuff and should be a high-leverage arm again for the Giants in 2025 if he can throw enough strikes.
LaMonte Wade Jr.
LaMonte Wade Jr. Settles at $5 million
Thu, Jan 9, 2025, 11:44 AM
The Giants and Wade avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $5 million contract Thursday, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
Analysis: This was Wade's final year of arbitration eligibility, as he's slated to hit free agency next winter. While the 31-year-old is the current favorite to open the 2025 season as the Giants' primary first baseman against right-handed pitching, there have been reports of the club seeking help at the position from outside the organization and also whispers of Wade being available via trade.
Austin Warren
Austin Warren Scrubbed from 40-man roster
Wed, Jan 8, 2025, 2:16 PM
The Giants designated Warren for assignment Wednesday, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
Analysis: The move clears a spot on the 40-man roster for Sam Huff, who was claimed off waivers. Warren made six appearances for the Giants in 2024, allowing two runs with a 7:5 K:BB over 10.2 innings. He and the Giants had avoided arbitration with a one-year contract agreement back in November.
Sam Huff
Sam Huff Claimed by San Francisco
Wed, Jan 8, 2025, 2:13 PM
The Giants claimed Huff off waivers from the Rangers, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
Analysis: Huff has held his own during his rare opportunities in the majors with a .768 OPS and 10 home runs in 214 career plate appearances, although that's come with a 33.6 percent strikeout rate. He's out of options, so the Giants will need to carry him on their Opening Day roster in 2025 or put him back through waivers.
Justin Verlander
Justin Verlander Headed to Bay Area
Tue, Jan 7, 2025, 6:30 PM
Verlander signed a one-year, $15 million contract with the Giants on Tuesday, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Verlander battled shoulder and neck injuries in 2024, the latter of which he's hinted at returning too soon from and could have played a factor in him finishing the year with a 5.48 ERA and 1.38 WHIP over 90.1 innings -- easily the worst line of his illustrious career. Set to turn 42 in February, he's unlikely to approach numbers similar to his 2022 AL Cy Young campaign, though a full offseason of recovery could enable the veteran righty to return to form as a quality starter in 2025.
Ray Burgos
Ray Burgos Back in San Francisco on MiLB deal
Tue, Dec 24, 2024, 8:58 AM
The Giants re-signed Burgos to a minor-league contract on Dec. 14.
Analysis: Burgos made one appearance for the Giants in 2024 before being removed from their 40-man roster, but he'll stick around in the organization on a minors pact. The 26-year-old posted a 1.69 ERA and 27:5 K:BB across 26.2 innings at Triple-A Sacramento in 2024.
Willy Adames
Willy Adames Passes physical with Giants
Tue, Dec 10, 2024, 4:39 PM
Adames passed his physical with the Giants on Tuesday, making his seven-year, $182 million contract with the team official, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
Analysis: The Giants and Adames agreed to the lucrative deal Saturday, one he earned in large part due to the career-high 32 home runs and 112 RBI he compiled across 161 regular-season games with the Brewers in 2024. The star shortstop's contract is the largest in team history, and he'll be formally introduced at a news conference Thursday.
Jung Hoo Lee
Jung Hoo Lee No restrictions in spring training
Mon, Dec 9, 2024, 4:42 PM
Giants manager Bob Melvin said Monday that Lee (shoulder) will have no restrictions at the start of spring training, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
Analysis: Lee is right at the end of a six-month timetable that was provided following surgery in June to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder. It's not clear what kind of workouts Lee is able to do currently, but it would appear there are no concerns about his readiness for the beginning of camp and Opening Day. The 26-year-old slashed .262/.310/.331 with two home runs and two stolen bases in his first 37 games for the Giants before going under the knife. He's projected to be the Giants' center fielder and likely leadoff man next season.
Jordan Hicks
Jordan Hicks Will rejoin rotation in 2025
Mon, Dec 9, 2024, 2:56 PM
Giants president of baseball operations Buster Posey confirmed Monday that Hicks will go back into the rotation in 2025, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
Analysis: It had been the plan and the Giants will not deviate from it even as Hicks struggled to hold up both from a performance and health standpoint in 2024 while making 20 of 29 appearances as a starting pitcher. Hicks finished the year with a 4.01 ERA, 1.39 WHIP and 90:41 K:BB over 98.2 frames during his time in the Giants' rotation. He did finish with 109.2 innings, theoretically better setting him up to handle a starter's workload in 2025.
Tyler Fitzgerald
Tyler Fitzgerald Slotted in at second base
Mon, Dec 9, 2024, 2:39 PM
Giants president of baseball operations Buster Posey said Monday that he sees Fitzgerald as the team's regular second baseman next season, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
Analysis: Posey couldn't comment on the Willy Adames signing yet because it's not official, but with Adames aboard Fitzgerald will slide over to the keystone. The position is not foreign to Fitzgerald, who started four games at second base for the Giants in 2024 and 87 during his time in the minors. Fitzgerald had a mini-breakout with San Francisco this season, slashing .280/.334/.497 while hitting 15 homers and stealing 17 bases over 96 games.
Kai-Wei Teng
Kai-Wei Teng Re-signs with San Francisco
Mon, Dec 9, 2024, 10:59 AM
The Giants re-signed Teng to a minor-league contract Nov. 29.
Analysis: After being non-tendered last month, the right-hander has returned to the organization on a minor-league pact. Teng, 26, spent most of the 2024 season at Triple-A Sacramento, where he put up an 8.60 ERA and 1.81 WHIP over 75.1 innings.
Ethan Small
Ethan Small Back in San Francisco on MiLB deal
Mon, Dec 9, 2024, 10:57 AM
The Giants re-signed Small to a minor-league contract Nov. 26.
Analysis: Small was non-tendered by the Giants in November but quickly re-signed on a minor-league pact. The left-hander missed much of the 2024 season with an oblique injury and allowed six runs over nine frames at Triple-A Sacramento.
Willy Adames
Willy Adames Signs seven-year pact with Giants
Sat, Dec 7, 2024, 4:44 PM
Adames signed a seven-year, $182 million contract with the Giants on Saturday, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Adames slashed .251/.331/.462 with 32 homers, 112 RBI and 21 steals during the regular season in 2024 -- good enough to land the largest contract in Giants franchise history. The 29-year-old infielder immediately gives a power boost to a San Francisco lineup that ranked 15th in the majors with a .396 slugging percentage, and he's a safe bet to play in the field every day after starting all but one of Milwaukee's games last year. Assuming Adames fills in as the Giants' shortstop, the team may now choose to move Tyler Fitzgerald to second base while Brett Wisely gets pushed to the bench.
Max Stassi
Max Stassi Inks minors deal with San Francisco
Fri, Nov 29, 2024, 12:07 PM
The Giants signed Stassi (hip) to a minor-league contract Nov. 19.
Analysis: Stassi became a free agent earlier this month when the White Sox declined his 2025 option, but he's quickly latched on with a new organization. The veteran catcher had left hip surgery in June and it's not clear whether he will be healthy for the start of spring training. Regardless, Stassi is likely to begin the season at Triple-A Sacramento, as the Giants are set at catcher with Patrick Bailey and Tom Murphy.
Mike Yastrzemski
Mike Yastrzemski Sticking in San Francisco
Fri, Nov 22, 2024, 4:26 PM
Yastrzemski agreed to a one-year, $9.25 million contract with the Giants on Friday to avoid arbitration, Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports.
Analysis: The 34-year-old is entering his final season of arbitration eligibility and was floated as a non-tender candidate, but he's instead set to be back for a seventh season in San Francisco. Yastrzemski played in 140 games during 2024 and hit 18 home runs with a .231/.302/.437 slash line.
