Landen Roupp
Landen Roupp Diagnosed with bone bruise
Fri, Aug 22, 2025, 5:28 PM
Thursday's MRI revealed Roupp has a bone bruise in his left knee, and the pitcher will seek out a second opinion, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
Analysis: It's a positive result for Roupp, who was struck by a comebacker and fell awkwardly during Wednesday's start before requiring a cart to exit the field of play. The 26-year-old will pursue other opinions, but for now, it seems like he's avoided a severe injury. While Roupp is on the IL, Carson Whisenhunt should fill the open spot in the rotation.
Carson Whisenhunt

Fri, Aug 22, 2025, 1:11 PM
The Giants recalled Whisenhunt from Triple-A Sacramento ahead of his start against the Brewers on Friday.
Analysis: Whisenhunt officially joins the 26-man roster, taking the place of Landen Roupp (knee). The 24-year-old Whisenhunt made his MLB debut in late July with three starts for the Giants, posting a 5.02 ERA and a 12:7 K:BB across 14.1 innings before being sent back down Aug. 12. Whisenhunt's numbers at Sacramento weren't much better, as he tallied a 4.37 ERA and 92:32 K:BB across 103 innings.
Landen Roupp
Landen Roupp Officially lands on 15-day IL
Fri, Aug 22, 2025, 1:08 PM
The Giants placed Roupp on the 15-day injured list Friday with left knee inflammation.
Analysis: The club is calling it inflammation for now, but Roupp underwent an MRI on Thursday and a more specific diagnosis could come Friday, per Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area. Roupp was injured during Wednesday's start versus the Padres after being struck by a comebacker and then twisting awkwardly when he fell to the ground. Carson Whisenhunt is taking Roupp's spot on the roster and in the rotation.
Andrew Knizner
Andrew Knizner Doubles in loss
Fri, Aug 22, 2025, 9:50 AM
Knizner went 1-for-3 with an RBI double and a run scored in Thursday's 8-4 loss to the Padres.
Analysis: Knizner lined a double to right field in the third inning, driving in San Francisco's first run, before coming around to score. The hit was his first since Aug. 9 and just his second this month. The backup catcher is slashing .172/.213/.241 with eight runs scored, three RBI and one home run across 62 plate appearances this season.
Luis Matos
Luis Matos Multi-hit effort in defeat
Fri, Aug 22, 2025, 9:47 AM
Matos went 2-for-4 with a triple, a double and a run scored in Thursday's 8-4 loss to the Padres.
Analysis: Matos was recalled from Triple-A Sacramento on Thursday and immediately made an impact in his return to the big leagues. The 23-year-old led off the third inning with a triple and came around to score the Giants' first run before adding a double in the seventh, marking his first game this season with multiple extra-base hits. He's slashing .178/.218/.381 with 14 runs scored, 13 RBI, five home runs and two stolen bases across 124 MLB plate appearances this season.
Willy Adames
Willy Adames Crushes 20th homer amid cold spell
Thu, Aug 21, 2025, 8:54 PM
Adames went 1-for-2 with a solo home run and two walks in Thursday's 8-4 loss to the Padres.
Analysis: Adames went back-to-back with Rafael Devers in the sixth inning for the former's 20th homer of the campaign. Adames' production in August has been a far cry from his output during a prolific July, when he produced a 1.096 OPS across 24 outings. Across 70 at-bats to open this month, the shortstop is batting a paltry .129 with four big flies, six RBI and two stolen bases.
Rafael Devers
Rafael Devers Smashes 25th homer in loss
Thu, Aug 21, 2025, 8:47 PM
Devers went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Thursday's 8-4 loss to the Padres.
Analysis: That's now six homers during the month for Devers, who also clubbed his 25th of the year Thursday. Devers closed the month of July on a 0-for-14 dry spell at the plate, but he's been far more productive so far in August. Over his last 72 at-bats, the star corner infielder is hitting .250 with two doubles, 10 RBI, 10 runs scored and 11 walks.
Justin Verlander
Justin Verlander Stumbles in 10th loss
Thu, Aug 21, 2025, 6:30 PM
Verlander (1-10) took the loss Thursday against the Padres, allowing seven runs on seven hits and one walk in 4.1 innings. He struck out four.
Analysis: Following a season-best outing in innings and strikeouts against the Rays, Verlander surrendered a season-worst seven runs Thursday in his shortest start since July 18 in Toronto. The veteran right-hander had made it through three spotless frames before the Padres got to him, and it was the sixth time this year that he couldn't toss at least five innings. Verlander has a shaky 4.64 ERA, 1.44 WHIP and 99:37 K:BB over 110.2 frames, and he'll remain difficult to trust from a fantasy perspective in a tough matchup against the Cubs next week.
Carson Whisenhunt
Carson Whisenhunt Confirmed as Friday starter
Thu, Aug 21, 2025, 2:20 PM
The Giants will recall Whisenhunt from Triple-A Sacramento to start Friday's game versus Milwaukee, Justice delos Santos of The San Jose Mercury News reports.
Analysis: Whisenhunt made his MLB debut earlier this season and has started three games for the Giants in 2025, turning in a 1-1 record, 5.02 ERA, 1.40 WHIP and 12:7 K:BB across 14.1 innings. He's surrendered five home runs across those three outings and will have a tough road matchup versus the Brewers, who rank third in MLB with 653 runs scored.
Carson Whisenhunt
Carson Whisenhunt Likely to start Friday
Thu, Aug 21, 2025, 1:24 PM
Whisenhunt has been added to the Giants' taxi squad and appears likely to get called up from Triple-A Sacramento to start Friday's game in Milwaukee, Shayna Rubin of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
Analysis: The Giants have a pair of rotation spots open following an injury to Landen Roupp (knee) and the demotion of Kai-Wei Teng. One of those slots will be filled by Whisenhunt, who has made three starts for the Giants this season, collecting a 5.02 ERA and 12:7 K:BB across 14.1 frames. The lefty doesn't make for a desirable streaming option on the road against a tough Brewers lineup.
Patrick Bailey
Patrick Bailey Getting breather
Thu, Aug 21, 2025, 1:15 PM
Bailey is absent from the lineup for Thursday's game in San Diego.
Analysis: Bailey had made four straight starts at catcher, so he's earned a day off in Thursday's matinee. Andrew Knizner is behind the plate and batting ninth for the Giants.
Erik Miller
Erik Miller Moved to 60-day IL
Thu, Aug 21, 2025, 1:06 PM
The Giants transferred Miller (elbow) from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day injured list Thursday.
Analysis: Miller experienced a setback with his left elbow injury last week on a rehab assignment. He would be eligible for activation from the IL in early September, but the lefty will not resume throwing for another couple weeks, so his season might very well be over.
Luis Matos
Luis Matos Recalled from Triple-A
Thu, Aug 21, 2025, 1:00 PM
The Giants recalled Matos from Triple-A Sacramento on Thursday.
Analysis: Matos has slashed an ugly .167/.208/.351 in 120 games at the big-league level this season. He's starting in right field in Thursday's game versus the Padres and could see fairly regular reps against left-handed pitching.
Kai-Wei Teng
Kai-Wei Teng Going back to minors
Thu, Aug 21, 2025, 12:54 PM
The Giants optioned Teng to Triple-A Sacramento on Thursday.
Analysis: Teng has had an excellent season in the minors, but thus far that hasn't translated at the big-league level, as he's posted an 8.78 ERA and 12:9 K:BB over 13.1 frames covering three starts and one relief outing. He'll try to get back on track and earn another opportunity later this season.
Grant McCray
Grant McCray Optioned to Triple-A
Thu, Aug 21, 2025, 12:52 PM
The Giants optioned McCray to Triple-A Sacramento on Thursday.
Analysis: McCray is just 2-for-20 with 10 strikeouts for the Giants this season and hadn't been playing much. His roster spot will be taken by Luis Matos.
Landen Roupp
Landen Roupp Carted off after comebacker
Wed, Aug 20, 2025, 9:45 PM
Roupp was removed from Wednesday night's game against the Padres after he was struck in the right leg by a comebacker in the bottom of the third inning, Justice delos Santos of The San Jose Mercury News reports.
Analysis: Roupp was hit in the right hamstring by a ball off the bat of Ramon Laureano, and his left knee also appeared to twist awkwardly as he fell to the ground. Trainers came out, and Roupp was eventually carted off the field. Prior to the injury, Roupp pitched 2.1 innings, allowing three earned runs on five hits and two walks. Roupp struck out a pair and also surrendered two home runs. Joey Lucchesi came on in relief of the injured Roupp.
Blade Tidwell
Blade Tidwell Undergoing MRI on shoulder
Wed, Aug 20, 2025, 7:10 PM
Tidwell will undergo an MRI on his right shoulder after experiencing discomfort during a recent bullpen session, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
Analysis: Tidwell was acquired from the Mets at the trade deadline in the deal that sent Tyler Rogers to New York. Since being acquired by San Francisco, Tidwell has pitched in three games (two starts) at Triple-A Sacramento, registering a 1.69 ERA, 0.88 WHIP and 23:5 K:BB across 16 innings of work. He's likely to be shut down for a little while.
Carson Seymour
Carson Seymour Fans three in bulk relief
Wed, Aug 20, 2025, 11:16 AM
Seymour surrendered one earned run on three hits and one walk while striking out three across three innings in Tuesday's 5-1 loss to the Padres.
Analysis: Seymour worked in long relief once again, logging three innings for the fourth time in nine appearances this season. The right-hander threw 33 of his 54 pitches for strikes and recorded at least three strikeouts for the third time. He owns a 3.92 ERA, 1.40 WHIP and 16:8 K:BB, allowing six home runs in 20.2 innings.
Spencer Bivens
Spencer Bivens Allows one run vs. San Diego
Wed, Aug 20, 2025, 11:10 AM
Bivens allowed one earned run on three hits and one walk across 1.1 innings in Tuesday's 5-1 loss to the Padres.
Analysis: Bivens entered the game with one out and the bases loaded in the fourth. He walked one batter, forcing in a run, but prevented the Padres from doing further damage. The right-hander ran into trouble in the fifth, giving up two singles, a double and a run before being pulled with two outs and a runner on. The 31-year-old has appeared in 10 games since the All-Star break, posting a 6.89 ERA, 2.11 WHIP and 11:6 K:BB across 15.2 innings during that span.
Erik Miller
Erik Miller Shut down from throwing
Tue, Aug 19, 2025, 7:08 PM
Miller (elbow) won't throw for two weeks before being reevaluated, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
Analysis: Miller underwent an MRI this week, which showed additional left elbow inflammation. The southpaw has been sidelined since early July after suffering a left elbow sprain, and he was nearing a return to the major-league roster after making four rehab appearances with Triple-A Sacramento, but he will now remain sidelined for the foreseeable future. At this point, Miller is unlikely to be activated from the 15-day injured list until mid-September at the earliest.
